The Brief

Connecting the Roots is a conservation charity focused on environmental education and local empowerment in Costa Rica. Their UK launch – a collaborative fundraising event with Brighton’s Enter Gallery – required a fast, functional web presence, a sharp communications plan, and a set of branded materials that reflected their values.

They had a clear mission, strong research, and a logo – but no live website, brand toolkit, or supporting content.

The Approach

Website Launch on a Budget

With just weeks to go before the event, I worked closely with developers to translate a draft PDF design into a functioning website. Budget constraints ruled out tools like Figma, so I rebuilt the layout as requested in Photoshop, delivering a clean, layered .psd file for the developers to implement. This ensured the site could launch in time, despite technical limitations.

Event Communications & Creative

  • Compiled and managed a targeted guest list
  • Designed and distributed a Paperless Post invitation, allowing RSVP tracking
  • Created artist biographies to accompany donated works for auction via Artsy
  • Supplied content to Artsy via spreadsheet for seamless upload and platform consistency
  • Designed gallery-based promotional materials:
    • A5 cards to include with in-store purchases
    • Large-format vinyl poster displayed in the gallery
  • Produced a digital slideshow showcasing the charity’s on-the-ground impact in Costa Rica, including their work with local schools
  • Created final ‘thank you’ A5 cards to be included in deliveries of artwork bought at the event

Collaboration & Promotion

  • Liaised with artists to supply branded graphics for social promotion
  • Worked alongside gallery staff to align messaging, and ensure the gallery’s own marketing and business goals were adhered to
  • Maintained consistency across all assets, while ensuring the tone felt warm, grassroots-led and aligned with the gallery’s style

Challenges & Solutions

  • Tight budget: Delivered a working website design from a PDF using Photoshop instead of Figma – not ideal, but effective
  • Tight timeline: Managed multiple deliverables across web, print, auction prep, and comms in just 8 weeks
  • Limited brand assets: Built a temporary but cohesive visual language around the event using existing research and tone cues
